The Broad Scope Of The Medical Office Assistant Position
Some medical office assistant positions will give on the job training, without necessitating the person doing any additional studying. However, in most instances it is preferable to take a course to properly prepare you for the job, especially as the medical field uses a lot of specific terminology and procedures. Some courses, lasting up to six or seven months, require full time attendance at a college while others can be completed online.
A medical office assistant program will prepare a student with necessary skills and an understanding of basic medical procedures and terminology so they are easily able to enter into the medical field. After undertaking a basic course that can include subjects such as keyboarding, medical terminology, medical billing and basics courses in human biology and first aid, additional courses can be taken at the person’s leisure to improve their skills. Additional courses that can be taken separately include medical transcription, advanced terminology, billing and health insurance classes. Enhancing skills by taking additional accredited courses will improve career options and salary level.
Typically, once employed, they will be responsible for greeting patients and directing them to wherever they are meant to go. They will also answer the telephone and help make appointments for patients. If working in a hospital, they will also most likely help with patient admissions, filling in forms and making sure that all of the admission paperwork is in order. Aside from these tasks, other duties such as entering and maintaining electronic records, billing, insurance claims and some basic bookkeeping may also be assigned, depending on the facility and the scope of the assistant’s experience and training.
The assistant is often the first person to come in contact with a patient. They also are responsible for handling patients during crucial times such as when being admitted to a hospital or when filing to claim insurance. Patients can be nervous, tense, upset or exhibit other atypical behavior during these times. Because of this it is important that an assistant has very good people handling and communication skills. While not usually directly involved in the physical care of the patient, the responsibility towards a patients total well-being is just as important and as such is an important position in any medical facility.
