The Basics Regarding Medical Assistant Training

Anyone wishing to become a Medical Assistant will first need to undergo a Medical Assistant Training course. These courses can be taken at either a community college or a career college. Training can range anywhere from nine months to two years depending on the type of training and certification the person is aiming for. For those wishing to possibly extend their education at a later date, credits earned in the two year associate level degree program will go towards a Bachelor’s degree. This study course takes two years.  For someone wishing to enter the job market as an assistant, a general diploma is all that is needed.  It usually takes less time to earn this degree at a career college.

Training is designed to help those entering this profession to do all that will be required of them. As the job description is quite wide, subjects taught will range from accounting and record-keeping to pharmacology and clinical procedures.  Students learn about medical law, billing procedures, health insurance and study practical subjects such as anatomy and first aid.

Following the initial college training an externship of at least 160 hours is required. During this practical experience, assistants work at medical facilities under the tutelage of medical professionals. As this is part of the ongoing training program, MA students work without pay for the duration of their externship and are required to work regular hours. Most schools or colleges are affiliated with different medical institutions and clinics that are willing to help with this final part of the training.  A successful externship is of paramount importance as the results will determine how ready the student is to enter into full time employment as an MA. In many cases, the medical facility will actually end up employing some of those students who do their externship with them; either on a part time, or potentially full time basis.

If financial aid is needed in order to complete studies, a student may apply for a scholarship such as the federally funded Pell Grant. Stafford Loans may also be granted if needed, in order for a student to complete their term of study.
