The physician assistant career is becoming a popular job prospect for many health care professionals who aspire to provide higher level of healthcare service. Along with the job satisfaction and higher pay, physician assistants enjoy the privilege of providing direct healthcare to patients and plan the course of their treatment, with the supervision of physicians.

The physician assistant training program is offered in many medical schools, community colleges, academic health centers and in some hospitals and in the military. In 2008, 142 physician assistant training programs have been accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant in the country. These programs are guaranteed to prepare its students to become competent physician assistants and are equipped with the required facilities to expedite the training. Over the 142 schools, 21 of them offer up to bachelor’s degree, 3 of them offer up to associate’s degree, certificates are given in 5 and 113 programs offer master’s degree. The program can usually be finished by full time students in two years and the course outlines vary from program to program.

Although the course outlines may differ, the fundamental concepts and basic skills training are still intact throughout the program. Medical terminology is a key concept in the training as physician assistants deal with a lot of health problems and they will have to be familiar with different terms and jargons that are commonly used. Studying the anatomy and physiology of the human body is also an important component to become a physician assistant, along with learning about the disease process and understanding how the body systems cope and change because of it. By learning the disease process, physician assistants can get to know in turn how to make diagnoses, plan out treatment plans, and make orders that will facilitate the recovery of the patient. Students must also be familiar with the pharmacological interventions, learning what drugs to prescribe and understanding how they interact with the body systems, and being aware of its risks and precautions.

Along the course, students will have the opportunity to practice their profession through internship. In different healthcare settings, they will be required to complete certain amount of internship hours providing physician assistant services to the patients. They will be working under the guidance of licensed physicians and will be graded for their performance in the actual working environment. This provides them a venue to polish their skills, apply their knowledge in the profession, as well as get comfortable with the kind of working conditions physician assistants have.

Oftentimes, they will be assigned to work in different areas such as orthopedics, surgery, internal medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics and more. They must be well verse with the different areas as physician assistants serve an extension of the physicians in the delivery of healthcare.

Physician tasks can be performed by a trained physician assistant. PA’s are capable of patient diagnosis, drug prescription, health treatment planning, and perform surgical procedures at some extent. But along with their ability to basically practice medicine, they have the responsibility of being supervised by physicians and report to them from time to time. Physician assistants can make any healthcare treatment run smooth by providing significant assistance to working physicians.

Becoming a physician assistant requires the completion of the physician assistant training. This program is given by many schools, institutions and hospitals that provide health-related degree programs. Accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, 154 physician assistant programs in the United States are nationally recognized to produce competent physician assistant graduates. Enrolling to an accredited school allows a graduate to take the certification exam required to become a certified physician assistant, which is also required to be able to work in the country.

Physician assistant requirements for admission to the program can vary from program to program. Almost all programs require its applicants to pass the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) as well as pass the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) of the school. GRE basically measures an individual’s verbal reasoning, critical thinking skills, analytical writing, and quantitative reasoning skills that may have been acquired during the progress of the person’s whole education. These skills are not focused on a particular field of study. The MCAT however is specific to the concepts relevant to medicine, health, and healthcare in general. With the comprehensiveness of these requirements, many of the enrollees of the program have worked as registered nurses, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians of which are very much inclined in the health industry.

Other prerequisites may also include completed certain science and non-science courses during college, acquiring a good grade point average, acquire additional training from recognized agencies such as basic life support from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross, or possess some skills in using basic computer hardware and commonly used software programs and be familiar with the use of the internet.

The physician assistant program can usually be finished in two years by full-time students, but some can take more than two years. The program consists of one year didactic training which focuses on theoretical components of the practice of medicine, followed by another year of clinical rotations in various fields of healthcare, such as surgery, geriatrics, pediatrics, internal medicine, psychiatry, and many more. Physician assistants must be able to master the fundamental knowledge and skills set expected of them so that they can practice medicine with great competency.

Working as a physician assistant can be rewarding. Many healthcare providers such as nurses and medical technologist further-up their careers to become physician assistants to enjoy the activities and satisfaction that comes with the job. The work of physician assistants involves clinical duties such as performing examinations, patient diagnosis, patient evaluation and more, but they must be supervised by physicians.

Many medical school and academic health centers, and a few community colleges and hospitals offer physician assistant degree programs that usually give master’s degree. Few programs give associate’s degree and certificates, as many institutions require physician assistants with Master of Science in Physician Assistant degree. Entering the physician assistant degree program may become tedious for some individuals because of the requirements for admission. Many schools require that applicants must have gained an amount of previous working experience in the healthcare industry; some require its applicants to obtain bachelor’s degrees of other health studies from accredited colleges. Each school has varying prerequisites so it is necessary for prospective physician assistant students to inquire first about admission requirements.

The degree program can typically be finished within two years, engaging students in classroom and laboratory classes in usually the first 15 months, as well as requiring them to finish clinical rotations in different healthcare facilities at the last 12 months of the program. They must also finish thesis making if they chose to enroll for a master’s degree program.

Students must master the basic and fundamental concepts relevant to the career. The typical courses involved in the program include human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, clinical procedures, laws and ethics related to the medical field, physical assessment and diagnosis, medical research, among others. They are also required to complete clinical rotation duties in different health settings, providing internship services to patients in the fields of general surgery, pediatrics, geriatrics, emergency medicine, internal medicine, family medicine, gynecology, primary care and more. Along the while, they will be graded for their performances, and in some rare chances, institutions they are sent to may even provide them job openings after they graduate from the program.

Physician assistant programs must be accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant. Accredited programs ensure that students will be receiving education that meets standard requirements. In addition, enrolling in accredited programs makes its students eligible to take the certification exam administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, as well become registered in the State they plan to work in. Both national certification and state registration are required to be able to practice the profession.

Physician assistants are healthcare professionals that practice medicine with the supervision of physicians. They are capable of performing tasks which are traditionally performed only by physicians, such as diagnosing a patient, prescribing medications, and evaluating the progress of the treatment. As such, many healthcare professionals enter the physician assistant program to enjoy the activities of a physician assistant.

Aspiring surgical physician assistants must enter a physician assistant program which is designed in the surgical aspect of the career. PA programs are widely offered in many community colleges, universities and some hospitals as well as the military. These programs must be accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, so that its graduates are eligible to take the certification exam which is required by the State. Courses included in the program usually consist of pathophysiology, psychopathology, pharmacology, clinical procedures, clinical laboratory medicine, and physical assessment. SPA’s are also trained to perform their tasks in different fields as in orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, obstetrical surgery, gynecological surgery and more.

After graduating from an accredited physician assistant program, physician assistants should first take the certification, of which afterwards they can work into the specialization. Surgical physician assistants focus their attention and expertise on the surgical field of medicine. They handle the consultation regarding surgical operations through the procedure itself. Although it is not typical, many surgeons are now leaving aspects of the surgical preparation and sometimes even the operation itself to the surgical physician assistant. Most often, surgical physician assistants act as the first assistant or secondary assistant to the surgeon. They are responsible for preparing the client for the procedure, explain the procedure and provide treatment alternatives, prepared the surgical theatre, handle various surgical equipment and take care of post-operative tasks.

The demand of surgical physician assistants focused on different areas is on the rise. In particular, surgical PA’s focused on cardiovascular surgery are at the top of the list. Non-specializing physician assistants earn an average of $60,000 to $80,000 a year. But specializing physician assistants can earn up to $90,000 to $100,000 annually. Good working experience in the field can also increase the salary.

The work of a surgical physician assistant can be a tedious, technical, and holds great responsibility in regards to the patient’s safety. SPA are required to be sharp and dexterous during a surgical operation, be smart in making healthcare decisions, and be constantly up to date with the latest trends and changes in the healthcare industry. As the lives of patients can often be in their hands, surgical physician assistants must be competent and qualified enough to continue their professional and personal growth.

Physician assistants are healthcare professionals that perform clinical duties that physicians usually do. Unlike medical assistants who perform routine tasks, physician assistants are capable of performing comprehensive clinical procedures while being supervised by a physician.

The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) have accredited over 150 physician assistant programs from many medical schools, academic health centers, community colleges, hospitals and the military across the United States. These programs have met the same requirements standardized by the ARC-PA, ensuring quality education and sufficient training to the PA students. Programs may give certificates, associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, and more commonly master’s degree. The program usually runs for 26 months of classroom and laboratory classes, and clinical practicums.

Interested individuals wanting to become physician assistants need to find schools or institutions offering the physician assistant program. However, admission for the PA program is usually limited because of the comprehensive admission requirements the physician assistant schools usually oblige applicants to comply with. Many schools require applicants to have some prior work experience in the healthcare industry, while some require applicants to have baccalaureate degrees of related health careers from other accredited colleges. Some schools only accept a number of applicants per semester which are determined through entrance exams and interviews. With that, it is an important task to check the admission requirements of each school that prospective PA students would want to enter into.

Although the course outline for the physician assistant program may vary from program to program, typical courses include human anatomy and physiology, medical diagnosis, medical laws and ethical principles, pharmacological interventions, pathology or study of human diseases, microbiology, and the many clinical procedures physician assistants are expected to do. PA students will also get to learn more about the scope of their practice, understanding their responsibility to report to physicians as required, and making smart decisions with regards to the patient’s healthcare plan and treatment alternatives. Students must also complete clinical rotations in various health facilities and be familiar with the common workload in general surgery, pediatrics, geriatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, primary care and psychiatry. As physician assistants, they must be able to cope with the different health problems that patients come to be helped with.

In order to be able to work in the country, PA graduates are required by law to take certification by taking the exam administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). In addition, they must also be registered in the state medical board of the state they want to work in. Furthermore, certification and registration is only available for PA graduates from accredited physician assistant schools.

The need for physician assistants is increasing as patients looking for more competent healthcare providers continue to increase as well. The physician assistant career is also becoming popular among individuals in the healthcare industry as the profession enjoys high job satisfaction and high salary.

Interested applicants who want to become a physician assistant in Florida need to enter the physician assistant program which is given in few schools. There are nine schools in Florida that offers the PA program and are accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant. These programs are guaranteed to prepare its students to become entry-level physician assistants. Individuals entering the program are usually already degree holders of health-related courses, or have had previous working experiences as nurses, radiologists, medical technologists among others.

Full-time students usually complete the PA program in two years. Most physician assistant programs in Florida offer master’s degree courses, and a few for associate and certificate programs. Schools such as the Keiser University, South University, Nova Southeastern Universities in Fort Myers, Jacksonville, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale offer the Master of Science in Physician Assisting program. The University of Florida and Barry University in Miami Shores give both the master’s degree and certificate programs, while Miami-Dade College offer associate degree courses. The requirements for admission in the program differ from school to school. Some require previous working experiences in the healthcare industry, while some require its applicants to be baccalaureate degree holders first. To know what the prerequisites are, it is imperative to inquire from the school or from its website for details.

Physician assistants carry a crucial role in their services to delivery healthcare. As such, physician assistants must be well-trained, disciplined, knowledgeable, and competent when rendering care and making healthcare decisions. Physician assistants practice medicine under the supervision of respective physicians.

All States in the U.S. including the District of Columbia have laws that govern the scope of practice for physician assistants. All jurisdictions require that before being eligible to work the profession, physician assistants must pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) which is administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). The exam is composed of 360 practical medical and surgical questions, and taken on a computer-based testing center. Certification is only available for PA graduates who have come from physician assistant master’s degree programs accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant. With that said, most working PA’s graduate with a master’s degree rather than a certificate or associate’s degree.

In addition to national certification, state legislations mandate that physician assistants are also required to become registered physician assistants in the State Medical Board of the state they wish to work in. Requirements for the eligibility and admission processes for registration vary from state to state, but it typically consists of an examination similar to the national certification exam.

To maintain the certified status, physician assistants must finish 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years. Continuing education units can be secured by attending and participating in national meetings, conferences, seminars, workshops, or by conducting research and home-study programs provided by many physician assistant schools. They must also take the Physician Assistant National Recertifying Exam (PANRE) every six years, or take an alternative program instead that combines learning experiences and take-home examinations. The PANRE is a 300-question test which can be retaken if failed by the test taker. There is however a 90-day waiting period between tests and it can only be taken twice a year. Continuing education helps PA’s get updated with the current trends and changes in the profession, which will make them render better healthcare services.

As patients continue to flow in and increasing every day, more and more competent physician assistants are being demanded across the country. Physician assistants practice medicine, that is, being able to diagnose illnesses and other health problems, plan the treatment of the patient, prescribe the necessary medications, order special procedures, or perform minor procedures, but they are required to report to physicians on a constant basis. Only those with the right qualifications to become certified and registered physician assistants can practice medicine and be of service to others.

Medical assistants perform routine tasks such as performing physical examinations, extracting blood samples, measuring vital signs and preparing patients for surgery. The presence of medical assistants enables the healthcare delivery system to run smooth and efficient because they are capable of doing a lot of versatile tasks, may it be in the clinical setting, in the office of health professionals or in the laboratory. They’re activities greatly rely on their work environment.

In order to work as a medical assistant, an individual must first enter the medical assistant program offered by many medical schools, community colleges, health agencies, and some hospitals. The medical assistant program can usually be finished in two years, garnering an associate’s degree or certificate. Accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) is important when choosing a school. Having graduated from an accredited program makes the graduate eligible to take the certification exam administered by certain certifying agencies.

Although certification is not necessarily required by employers and the State for medical assistants to practice, many of them prefer more certified or registered medical assistants compared to non-registered ones. Certification or registration is achieved by taking the certification exam administered by certifying organizations such as the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or the American Medical Technologists (AMT). The AAMA certification grants the title Certified Medical Assistant, while the AMT certification grants the title Registered Medical Assistant. In addition to national registration, state registration is also required so that the State can also recognize the competency of a medical assistant.

A registered medical assistant must be able to maintain the title through recertification by collecting continuing education units or credits (CEU). A total of 60 CEU’s must be completed. CEU’s can be obtained by participating or attending national meetings of health agencies, seminars and workshops about healthcare, and doing home-based studies through magazines, books, or online resources among others. In addition, 10 units must be about general concepts relevant to medical assisting, 10 about clinical practice, and another 10 about the administrative roles of medical assistants. The remaining 30 must be from the certifying agency, such as AAMA and AMT. However, the certifying body that certified the medical assistant determines the exact requirements for recertification. They have the authority to approve (based on their set criteria) the seminars, workshops, and conferences if they are worth continuing education units. Registered medical assistants have five years to comply with the recertification requirements.

As medical assistants deal with health, it is important that they keep themselves sharp and up to date with the changing trends in healthcare. Coping with the changes in the health industry enables medical assistants to provide better services to the patients, as well as promote their continuous personal growth.

Physician assistants are widely in Florida, as people in need of healthcare increases. PA’s are healthcare professionals that perform the duties of doctors but under their supervision. They serve as assistants to the physicians, but are allowed and capable of diagnosing, making healthcare plans, and treating patient’s illnesses themselves.

There are nine accredited schools in Florida that offer the physician assistant program. These schools are recognized by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant to provide quality education for its students. Among the nine programs, Nova Southeastern University in Fort Myers, Nova Southeastern University in Jacksonville, Nova Southeastern University in Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University in Orlando, South University in Tampa, and Keiser University in Fort Lauderdale offer master’s degree. Barry University in Miami Shores and the University of Florida offer both master’s degree and certificate, while Miami-Dade College offers associate’s degree. Physician assistant schools in Florida have different requirements for applicants to comply. Some schools require its applicants to be bachelor degree holders, while most require its applicants to have taken medical related-courses or have previous working experience in the related field.

The physician assistant program can usually be finished in two years-time. The first fifteen months usually involve classroom studies and laboratory classes that teach about relevant concepts in the medical practice. It usually includes classes in anatomy and human physiology, pharmacology, physical diagnosis, use of medical terminology, microbiology, laws and ethics related to healthcare, healthcare research and clinical problem solving. These concepts provide the fundamental knowledge for students to be well-versed with the duties of a physician assistant.

In the last year of the program, students will typically be immersed with completing internship hours and be rotated in different clinical areas such as surgery, orthopedics, family medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics, gynecology, prenatal care, among others. They must be able to be familiarized with the different fields of healthcare as physician assistants deal with all kinds of health problems. Students will acquire valuable experience throughout their clinical rotations and will slowly be comfortable with the working environment of the profession.

After the completion of the physician assistant program and acquiring the respective degrees, graduates need to pass the certification exam administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. In order to work in Florida, physician assistants must be certified to ensure that they are competent and responsible enough to handle the delicate and comprehensive work that is required of the career. In addition, they too must take up registration from the Florida State Medical Board.
